We’ve all heard of autism but we might not understand it fully. World autism day is a day to increase the understanding of autism and the acceptance of spectrum disorder. This is the ninth year that World Autism Awareness Day is being recognized.
Autism spectrum disorder is a “range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences,” according to autismspeaks.org.
Autism research is always progressing. In fact, there is much researchers still don’t understand about it. Just this year, researchers identified 18 additional gene variations that appear to increase the risk of autism. To date 61 genetic variations have been identified that affect autism risk. Most of these genes affect the biological pathways in the brain, how brain cells develop and communicate with each other.
There isn’t just one autism
Many don’t realize that autism has subtypes, which is why it is called a spectrum disorder. Increasingly, researchers aren’t calling it autism, but “autisms.” Researchers have a goal to better identify these subtypes so treatment can be personalized.
The CDC estimates 1 in 42 boys, and 1 in 189 girls have autism. About a third of people with autism are nonverbal. A third have an intellectual disability. Certain medical and mental health issues frequently accompany autism, like gastrointestinal disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances, ADHD, anxiety and phobias.
